Interbike 2008 - Mongoose Khyber Super

The pedal friendly 6" travel bike may be the perfect rig for the most riders out there. Ready to shred on any occasion and any terrain, they may very well be the answer to the question "what is a mountain bike?" Enter the 2009 Mongoose Khyber Super.
Full HD video inside!
Eternal ripper Eric Carter also fills us in on how, what and where he's been riding lately!

With 165mm of travel and a solid and well thought out parts spec it looks like the Khyber Super will be a great weapon if you are looking for a 'do it all' mountain bike.
Deciding to spec the Stan's ZTR Flow rims (and even with aluminum nipples!) is a great choice in my books. Light, and more importantly strong, they are an easy way to bring a 6" travel bike to life on the trail. The I-Beam seat and post combo is also a win-win: light and strong. Other neat bits include the remotely adjustable seat post and carbon air can equipped ROCO shock. Bling!
I don't need to point out that the Kyber's FreeDrive suspension does look a bit odd. What I should mention though (for those that didn't watch the video anyway) is that it is not a URT design, despite slightly resembling it. FreeDrive pivots off a relatively high single pivot and uses a floating BB system to prevent chain pull and keep things neutral.
I had a great time aboard their DH bike, the Boot'r. The FreeDrive system proved to be quite competent and excelled on the longer travel go-fast bike. I didn't get a chance to ride the Khyber Super but it looks like it's ready to rock!

Eric Carter was nice enough to come out into the blazing heat to talk a bit about what he's been up to lately, Thanks Eric!

i wonder how the rear pivot system feels like when you go down, i know they have it on their dh bike too
rear pivot system is mint just floats over everything while still letting you crank out even over the chatters
benjiscott82, you don't have to ask, most people are born with eyes.
Mongoose makes some sick bikes, at a crazy low price.

ive had a teocali and black diamond and they both pedalled really well, would be wicked to ride one in between those weights and travels, ie the khyber, so give me one u biatches
Wow... Mongoose is definately back... I love that they packaged with the cobra seatpost on the Khyber... every detail was covered with this setup. I want one.
I have this bike big brother and i can asure you that the freedrive linkage works a charm! it rides and pedals sooo well!
Check out the guy's face at 65s on the first video ahah. Now seriously, he did a great presentation of the bike.
Man the free-dive suspension system looks awesome, I really want a Nugget. 09 Mongoose are killing it.
My 6inch Devinci Hecktik weighs less though this is a sweet looking ride. The Marz rear air shocks feel amazing though i agree their fork quality has really dived.
damn, goose is coming out withsome great bikes for 09. I have to say that I never thought I'd be saying that though.
yeah big money your actually an idiot stroker trails are basicaly comparable to juicy 5/7s perfomanse wise
they have no feel , my friends were always fading .. look at the lever design the more links in there means less feel... (juicy 3 are the same as juicy 5)
man, the 55 better just have the 15mm as an option! if they changed it to 15mm only, that sucks ass!!

I cant see spending that much money on a bike that is found at wal-mart. mongoose needs to drop their cheap end bikes to give their higher end bikes much more value and worth.
The reason their high end bikes can be sold at such great prices is because they sell bikes at wal-mart. They go to the factory and say I want 20,000 of these turd frames and 1,500 of these awesome frames. It's called buying power. They pay less for the good frames because they are buying such a massive quantity of total frames. For companies like Banshee that only have maybe 3,000 made they end up paying much more per frame. I'm not comparing Mongoose's and Banshee's quality and design, only their ability to negotiate pricing.
i don't think they will drop there low end bikes as that is probably where most of there money comes from
I totally agree with haydn u wouldnt belive how many people at my school ride mongooses'
all around good bike durabilities not there yet

in the year 2000 i bought a mongoose frame, it was stolen for a year ,than i found it , since than i cracked about 10-12 frames...but this little guy is still holding on, i never wanna get rid of it...if i had to go on a empty iland i would take that with me! keep going ! nice work
does anybody know if they fixed the pivot problem from last year's model? my friend had one and the pivots kept coming loose, had to re-loc-titte almost monthly
The 2009 Khyber (and Nugget) will be fitted with a solid axle and Nylock nut. The type that was on there has been fine on the XC bikes but on bikes used as aggressively as the Khyber and Nugget some people experienced loosened pivots.
you are a pric, have you actuly read any of the comments above, or are you just another stereotyping arse hole?? :S
yeah i read them but no matter how good the one bike might be, the same company sells other crap bikes at walmart, its just wrong, gives a bad rep it would be the same with Santa Cruz, Jamis and so on
What Mongoose sells at Walmart is a totally different beast to what is sold at real bike shops. You can say the same about any car company Ford ,Chevy, Chrysler. All of them make cheap entry level vehicles and high end fully loaded sweet rides. That's how it is! Just because Mongoose sells at Walmart doesn't mean their high end "Real" bikes are crap.Do some research and you'll find that people with expensive high end bikes have had issues with frames breaking, components failing & suspension failures. Believe me no one is immune to putting out a Lemon or two !
